Default Unable to edit dimensions in AutoCAD 2009

    Good morning all.

I seem to be having a problem editing dimension text in 2009. Normally i would use the multiline text edit command to do this, but when you try to do this in 2009 you get a message saying that it is not an MTEXT object. Double clicking the dimension brings up the properties dialouge box which gives you the chance to override the dimension, but not add text to it.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to edit the text?

    Thanks guys

I don't know about 2009. But in 2008 to add text to the dimension. you would in the override box put "<>" this allow for the measured dimension to be placed then you add your text behind that.

example: if the measured dim was 10.00 and you placed "<>' typ" in the override. the dimension would read 10.00' typ

Thanks captain - that does works, but in all previous versions the text in dimensions could be treated as MTEXT. Doing it the way you suggest means you cant add any symbols or anything like a squared or do stacked text.

You need to use DDEDIT, not MTEDIT. I also set up a double click action for my dimensions so a double click launches DDEDIT and let's me edit my dims. FYI, DDEDIT still brings up the same text editor that MTEDIT does.

    Thanks for that.

How do you go about setting up so a double click edits the text?

My screen captures suck, so I'll try to explain it. Stay with me........

Okay, type CUI at the command line. A dialogue box opens with 2 boxes on the left, and one on the right. On the top left box, expand DOUBLE CLICK ACTIONS. Then, go down to the one that says TEXT. Right click on it and choose DUPLICATE. Okay, so now you have 2 for text. Right click on the duplicated one and rename it DIMENSION. I also suggest dragging it up in the list so all your actions stay in alphabetical order. Click on DIMENSION, and in the box to the right, you'll see a general and an andvanced area. Under general, name, it should say DIMENSION. Under advanced, object name, make it say DIMENSION. Since you copied it from the text action earlier, the macro for DDEDIT should already be there. Hit okay and you're done. Now test it with a dimension, it should work.

Excellent - i didnt realise you could edit the double click actions in the CUI. I'm sure i can find some other uses for that!!

Oh yeah, tons!! I need to add more, but the few I have are Dimension edit and when I double click a line, instead of properties, it launches the PEDIT command. Then I set PEDITACCEPT to 1. Now, when I need a line to be a pline, I just double click it. The only problem is if you use the OVERKILL command, it only works with peditaccept set to 0.

you can add symbols by using the codes.

    examples: %%d degree symbol
    %%c Diameter symbol
    \P second line (stacks text)

There are many others same as the MTEXT ones.
