"Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" is the second single past American vocaliser-actress Cher from her second album, The Sonny Side of Chér. Written past her and so-hubby Sonny Bono and released in 1966, the vocal reached No. three in the UK Singles Chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a unmarried calendar week (behind "(Yous're My) Soul and Inspiration" by The Righteous Brothers), eventually becoming one of Cher'south biggest-selling singles of the 1960s.[1] [2]

The single proved successful, charting loftier in several countries worldwide. Information technology became Cher's get-go million-selling single and her first top three hit in the UK (and her final until "The Shoop Shoop Vocal (It's in His Kiss)" reached No. ane in 1991). Critic Tim Sendra, in his anthology review of The Sonny Side of Cher, gave the song a mixed review: "The simply runway that has whatever real zest is the Bono-written novelty 'Blindside Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)', the kind of dramatic song Cher could knock out in her sleep simply as well a song with no real heart."[3] On the other manus, the reviewer for Cashbox said the song was "inventive", and predicted it would become a "blockbuster" hitting. The reviewer praised its "plaintive, dejection-soaked" style, equally well as the "interesting Gypsy-ish bankroll".[iv]

In 1987, Cher recorded a rock version of the song for her 1987 Platinum-certified comeback album Cher. Produced by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child, the vocal featured bankroll vocals by Jon Bon Jovi and Michael Bolton, among others, and was released equally a promotional single in 1988. Cher performed this version on her Heart of Stone Tour and on Living Proof: The Bye Tour, and information technology was played instrumentally on the Dressed to Kill Bout in 2014, Classic Cher in 2017–2020, and the Hither Nosotros Go Again Tour in 2018–2020.

Lady Gaga performed "Blindside Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" in July 2014 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, for the Telly special Cheek to Cheek Live!.[28] She was wearing a red-leather jumpsuit and a curly black wig which was previously worn by Cher.[29] [30] [31] The recording of the performance became available every bit a bonus track on the iTunes/Apple tree Music version of her kickoff collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek (2014).[32] Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian chosen Gaga's accept on the song "Vegas-brassy".[33] Mikael Wood of the Chicago Tribune thought that the vocal "in Gaga's hands played like a main course in finding new feeling in a familiar oldie."[34] Writing for Vulture, Richard Due south. Note to Gaga: More of this, please."[28]

Gaga's version of "Bang Blindside" debuted at No. ane on Billboard's Jazz Digital Songs Nautical chart.[36] The vocalizer'south later on performances of the song include concert tours ArtRave: The Artpop Ball (2014)[37] and the Cheek to Cheek Bout (2014–2015),[38] and her Jazz & Pianoforte Vegas residency (2019–2021).[39]

Nancy Sinatra recorded one of the best-known covers of the song, for her 1966 album How Does That Catch Y'all? Her version features tremolo guitar, played by her arranger, Billy Strange,[40] and had a resurgence in popularity when it was used in the opening credits of the 2003 Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill Volume i. In the sequence preceding the credits, Tarantino creates a literal, bloody interpretation of the song's chorus and the third poetry, near a hymeneals day.[41] Her version likewise was the theme for BBC coverage of the 2005 Wimbledon tennis championships, and has been sampled on several hip-hop recordings, including the Audio Bullys (featuring Nancy Sinatra) top 3 United kingdom hitting "Shot Yous Down" in 2005.

The song was besides very pop in Italy in 1966 when it was covered in Italian by Dalida. The vocal reached #1 and stayed for ii months winning her a gold tape. Following her recording, which appeared on her 1967 album "Piccolo Ragazzo", several Italian singers including Mina, and the psychedelic bands Equipe 84 and I Corvi[42] covered her version. Her version was also included as primary song of 2010 drama flick Heartbeats.
